Written by the Freemasons, Hannah Robinson, and Ellis-Bextor herself, "Bittersweet" heralds Sophie's return to solo releases since 2007's Trip The Lights Fantastic. Apparently pairing with the Freemasons for "Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)" was an inspiration for Sophie, as their influence is splattered all over this track like the paint that coats the dancers in the video. The song is pure class on all sides, showcasing how the pairing for "Heartbreak" should have sounded. Sophie's voice is buoyed beautifully by the lush synthwork providing by the Freemasons, who seemed to be on an Annie Lennox trip. Their extended remix elicits impressions of both "Sweet Dreams" and "Here Comes the Rain Again". Like Annie, Sophie's singing voice is very distinctive so the comparison is a positive one. Jodie Marsh remixed the track as well, taking it in a darker, less uplifting direction. It is totally your call on which is better, we're just glad Sophie's back on her own.
