Mixes That Matter - April 2004

From

ARTIST - Title (Remixer)

1. GOLDFRAPP - Strict Machine (Victor Calderone/Peter Rauhofer) - Alison Goldfrapp and her creative partner Will Gregory have moved away from the almost ambient feel of their first album and taken a much more dance oriented direction on their new one "Black Cherry". Ms Goldfrapp's vocal are dreamy, intimate and sexy. TIME OUT LONDON calls her "the dirty Kylie". Calderone turns out a masterful progressive house treatment that should have dancefloors going absolutely bonkers.

2. THICK DICK - Tweakin' (Saeed) - Tribal rhythms and agressive synth stabs drive this track from E-Smoove's alter ego Thick Dick. Obviously made for the clubheads, Saeed's Tweaked Out Dub is dark and intense.

3. ALAN T - Ferosh (Friburn & Urik/Evolved) - With a few choice phrases, Alan T can create a dramatic and driving circuit track with a sense of humour. Friburn & Urik use synth stabs to turn out an intense latin-flavoured mix while the Evolved dub is a bass-laden late night monster.

4. KELIS - Trick Me (Basement Jaxx/E-Smoove) - Kelis delivers a sultry, sexy performance on this very catchy, reggae-flavoured track. Basement Jaxx work the Caribbean feel while E-Smoove takes a more straight up, bass-driven direction. Both mixes are excellent.

5. GEORGE MICHAEL - Amazing( Full Intention) - Full Intention have produced a dreamy filtered house treatment that works brilliantly with George Michael's vocals. Sort of reminds me of "Deepest Blue" by Deepest Blue. The dub works well, too.

6. JAHKEY B featuring SATTA - Heart Attack (Peter Rauhofer) - Lately, Peter Rauhofer has been turning out one vocal circuit gem after another. This new release on Star 69 is another great example. Nice clean, open production lets the vocals drive the track. The chorus is so catchy you'll be singing it hours later on the way home from the club . Top drawer!

7. DEBORAH COX - Easy As Life (Tony Moran) - Ms Cox is ripping up Broadway in AIDA and this is one of the songs from the show. Tony Moran works his trademark magic and creates a another circuit anthem. Absolutely gorgeous.

8. MOUSSE T featuring EMMA LANFORD - Fire - This almost sounds like something from the late 80's on SOLAR RECORDS. House track with old school squiggly synths over funky attitude-laden vocals that sound like Sheryl Crow's blacker sister. Groovy.

9. ALISON DAVID - Dreams Come True (Hoxton Whores) - London-based session singer Alison David has been working in the background for years but, on this track, she's way out in front. Powerful, uplifting vocals soar over a rich, driving production. Very pretty.

10. HILARY DUFF - Come Clean (Chris Cox) - Young Ms Duff seems intent on conquering the worlds of film, television, fashion and music. And, so far, she seems to be diong just that. This new offering is a catchy pop tune that showcases her voice well. Chris Cox turns in another flawless production.
