Mixes that Matter - March 2004

From Paul Grace, for About.com

ARTIST - Title (Remixer)

1. BEYONCE - Naughty Girl (Calderone & Quayle) - Caldrone is definitely back with a vengence. First Astrid Suyanto and now Beyonce. The mix has a middle-eastern feel and the vocals are flawless; there's even a shout out to Donna Summer. Brilliant!

2. JANET JACKSON - Just A Little While (Peter Rauhofer/Maurice Joshua) - Another of Rauhofer's forays into the old-school house sound. The perfect treatment for Ms Jackson's vocals on this song. The Maurice Joshua mix is a filtered house version that's more laid back.

3. STACY BURKET featuring AUDIO ANGEL - Shake Down (Superchumbo/Original) - Although the buzz on this track is for the Superchumbo mix (rough and aggressive), it's the original mix that gets my juices flowing. Classic Murk sound. Think "Fired Up" by Funky Green Dogs. Deep and groovy!

4. MADONNA - Love Profusion (Ralphi Rosario) - It's the dub mix that matters on this one. Driving percussion and pulsing synths with just enough vocals to realize it's a Madonna track without being bogged down in a pretty mediocre melody.

5. ARMAND VAN HELDEN featuring Spalding Rockwell - Hear My Name - You're either going to love this or hate it (and I haven't made up my mind yet), but it is doing the business across the pond. Very catchy vocals and a distorted guitar hook that can really get on your nerves.

6. CALANIT - If You Come Back (Chris Cox) - Borderline cheese but, I have to admit, catchy as the sniffles in February. Chris Cox does a great job working the mix for maximum effect. Expect the drama queens to be singing along on the dancefloor.

7. ANASTACIA - Left Outside Alone (Jason Nevins) - Anastacia has such a distinctive voice, she always stands out in the mix. Nevins takes advantage of this by putting down a nice clean mix that lets the vocals drive the track. Kudos all around.

8. DYNAMIX featuring Indamatrix - Bodyfly - Dynamix are back with another gem. Several mixes to choose from although my favorite is the NYC mix. It's moody and dark with an uplifting chorus. Drama up the wazzoo.

9. RALPHI ROSARIO & DJ MARTIN FRY - Mas Enerrgia - Intense tribal monster. Synths bouncing around over beats and spoken Spanish vocals. The kind of track that you can lose yourself in.

10. SYKE & SUGARSTARR - Release Your Mind - Great little filtered house number. Loop driven track with a squiggly synth hook. Tres tres groovy!
