Mixes That Matter - December

From Paul Grace, for About.com

ARTIST - Title (Remixer)

MONICA featuring DirtBag & Missy Elliot - Set It Off (That Kid Chris) - Following up on her success with "So Gone", Monica's latest release might be even bigger. Based on Strafe's 1985 hit of the same name, That Kid Chris remixes the hell out of this. Monster hit!

ENRIQUE IGLESIAS - Addicted (The Scumfrog) - Whether you buy into the image or not, Enrique Iglesias does put out well written, catchy songs. "Addicted" is all that and more. And The Scumfrog trips this out something fierce. One of the most interesting and complex mixes he's ever done. Absolutely brilliant!

WIDELIFE featuring SIMONE DENNY - All Things (Widelife/Barry Harris) - The theme from "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" finally gets the remix treatment. And once again, it's an all Canadian show. Widelife toughen up their own track with a club version and Barry Harris really pushes his creative envelope on this mix, filling it with epic drama and synth work. Simone Denny is, as you would expect, flawless.

VIC & CHICOLA - The Music's Got Me - Classic circuit sound. Driving synth stabs with crashing percussion and a vocal ode to dance music that should have the boys flailing their arms around and around. Bangin'!

RIGHTEOUS - Stay Together - Using the intro from Tina Turner's 1984 hit "Let's Stay Together", Toronto's own Righteous turn out a house gem. Beautiful pads and synth work create a moody and captivating track. Yummy!

INDUSTRY - Release Me (Cruz & Bagz/Andy Morris/Peter Rauhofer) - I reviewed the original release a couple of months ago, but the new mixes deserve a mention. The Cruz & Bagz mix is a driving tribal stormer. The trippier Andy Morris mix is all about the synth stabs, bassline and drama. Rauhofer's mix is a more straight ahead house treatment. Something for everyone.

MURK featuring TAMARA WALLACE - Believe (Rosabel) - Rosabel actually give this track more Murkishness than the original had. Deep, dark and trippy, this track is all about the dreamy vocals and synthy bass line. Pumps!

HARRY ROMERO featuring JESSICA EVE - Calling Me - Both the vocal and the dub mixes work brilliantly here. Mr Romero has been getting progressively harder of late, but he still manages to capture that essential New York sound. The vocals have an almost 80's feel to them. Deep, dark & delicious!

MADONNA - Nothing Fails (Peter Rauhofer/Jason Nevins) - Rauhofer's mix sounds like an old Fingers, Inc. track from the early days of house. Very moody but surprisingly funky. Nevin's mix is much harder, almost techy.

BRITNEY SPEARS featuring MADONNA - Me Against The Music (Peter Rauhofer/Passengerz/Gabriel & Dresden) - Britney AND Madonna!!! Gee, I wonder if this is going to be a hit? Rauhofer takes the Retro-Electro direction again, while the Passengerz and Gabriel & Dresden go for the more traditional trancy house treatment.!
