BB: Many songs I have written are not on the album, these are for future doses!..songs on the album that I co-wrote, "All Over Me", "Diva," "Supernova Light", "I Snapped"...and then I also co-wrote "I'm Gonna Fly" on THE GURU soundtrack.
RS: Which song on the album do you most identify with? Is there one that feels like it is your story?
BB: I must say I relate to all of them, even the evil side of "Corrupt;" they all explain some layer in my life. I think "All Over Me" tells my more sensual/new relationship story and "Diva" tells my independence story.
RS: "Corrupt " was an underground club record - how did you first hear this song? What was your inspiration to re-do it?
BB: Oh! I love this song!!! Karissa use to work with my A&R man Lee Chesnut at Universal, and he once played me the song and I FELL IN LOVE!! The Drama, the story, it's like Cher's "Dark Lady"... and it allows me to be that fabulous, manipulative character----no comment on how I relate to her =).
RS: You also did a wonderful job covering Belinda Carlisle's classic "Heaven is a Place on Earth" and giving it such a personal touch. How did you choose the song? How did you approach it?
BB: Like I said when I discovered her in the 80's, I was HOOKED!! So it was a natural choice for me and I felt like we needed an upbeat power song to juxtapose some of the more sardonic vibes out there right now. And we approach it naked, of course---stripped it down and then built it back up with new grooves and our own interpretations... for instance, the "Right Here, Right Now" ad-lib was me just having fun, being in the moment of the song!
RS: "I Snapped," which you cowrote, has a really cool 80s feel; since you were born in 1980, how did 80's music influence you?
BB: It has obviously stayed stuck in my head!!! I was actually obsessed with the 70's during the eighties since I missed almost all of them!! Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Air Supply, Cher- but then suddenly, in the mid-80's, I discovered The Pointer Sisters, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, and Olivia Newton-John and thought, these chicks are having FUN!! and Thus they will influence me forever....
RS: What (or who) is the "Supernova Light" in your life?
BB: GOD for me, for others, whatever the name of that energy that is greater than this entire human experience!!! On this earth, it would be my darling Jason, or sometimes it is an entire club of people!!!!
RS: "All Over Me" has a really cool disco feel; which came first, the track or the lyrics?
BB: Yes, this is a yummy one! Actually Billy Stein had a fabulous track that wasn't disco that Jason and I wrote the lyrics to ALL OVER ME to, and then Tony and Warren put the disco edge onto it... which I LOVE- it reminds me of Studio 54.
RS: "Diva" must be a fun song to perform on stage. Who is your favorite diva or which famous divas have influenced you?
BB: It's a great song to perform; all drag queens must try this one. It really gives one a sense of self, and not allowing anyone to stand in the way of your destiny! Favorite Diva? Bette Midler, of course... She and Cher and any woman with a great sense of humor and raw look on life are divas that have influenced me, including my mother!
RS: When you performed "Without Love" in New York at Dance for the Cure, you looked like you were crying at the end of the song. Does it relate to a specific person in your life?
BB: When I perform my songs I choose a different scenarios quite frequently, to keep it fresh... sometimes it is about God, or my family, or an old lost love, or a future love... I think that evening it was about my love with my dear kindred soul Jason Paige, and my sadness if we were ever to grow apart.
