Interview with Faithless

by Dave "the Wave" Dresden

From

But, just as bad reviews loomed in the press as they did right here in the pages of DMA, Rollo also received his share of mail on the subject of panning Reverence. "I've got letters from people as far away as Spain with comments on the record: 'Dear Rollo, I have never written a letter before, but I bought your album and I'm very disappointed -- only two dance songs and blah blah...'" But, as you have people with varying opinions, Rollo also began receive good mail too, but all of it was after people had gotten over the inital shock of the lack of dance tracks. "Another guy who always writes me from Copenhagen said 'when I first heard your album I thought it was the biggest pile of rubbish, and I thought you really lost it, but now it's my favorite album' so yes it was a shock to a lot of people. But I think that the shock was definately a pleasant shock because now what's happening in Britain is that we're just about to go gold here, and yeah, it's taken a year, but now it's just selling everyday, selling copies -- I sometimes sit and think, I could be eating lunch or using the [bathroom], and someone, somewhere in the world is buying my album." Now there's a neat perspective. Rollo, I think that's called "fame," now get used to it.

Faithless' debut album is due April 12 on Arista records. If you just can't wait that long, it's been out for a year on Cheeky/Champion import, with a limited edition remix album called "Irreverence" to boot.

Written for DMA's Winter Music Conference issue, March 1998.
