Interview with Soul Solution

by Dave "the Wave" Dresden

From Dave "the Wave" Dresden, for About.com

DMA: What a shame -- your production smarts with that song could have been a monster pop dance record! Oh well...
Guy: Well, we're a little bit expensive so you kinda have to know what you want if you're going to assign us a project.
Lake: We really like the remix thing, it's a great avenue to show off your creativity, but we really want to cross it over into production right now. There's no longevity in remixing. One day your hot, then the next day, it's over. Just like that.
Guy: Plus, we feel like we're gipped on the remix thing too. It's really a production and we're not getting points on how much the record sold.
Lake: The Toni Braxton...if we had gotten points on that, forget about it! The amount of singles we helped sell on that -- at one point, it was selling 20-30,000 singles a week! Shania Twain, when the remixes came out was selling 90,000 copies a week. The mixes came out at the end of the record when the sales for it were slowing down. A lot of the sales then were because of the radio play they were getting from our mix. Record companies sometimes tell you 'ahh maybe on the next one we'll be able to get you a point' but it never happens. The producer doesn't want to pay the point, the artist doesn't want to pay the point, there's gotta be a provision in the artist contract put in when their first starting to do their negotiating with the record company that says that any remix points will be paid equally between the artist and the producer. Between all the people you have to get through just to negotiate points right now, you'll never get through -- it's just way too many people.

DMA: Don't you think that remixers of your calibre would want to come together on something like this? Guy and Lake: WE WANT TO DO THAT! But the problem is that NOBODY WANTS TO GET TOGETHER.
Lake: We brought this up at last years Billboard Summit and one remixer said "I need all the work I can get so I don't want to rock the boat." So, basically, your back is up against the wall with these guys.
