RS: Where do you see the future of dance music in the US?
Riddler: Dance music will never stop but unfortunately, unless people within the dance community learn to work with each other and become better business-minded people, you will see more dance labels closing and more people out of work. The days of the old skool business dance models are over. It doesn't pay and it doesn't work anymore. That's not to say I have the answer myself, but I do realize that we have to try other means for us to exist.
RS: How has Mp3 / file swapping affected the dance music scene in your opinion?
Riddler: There has been an adverse affect. It's the music industry's fault in many ways. Labels are conditioning a whole generation of DJ's to not go into record stores by not making certain music available. However, I think it hurts indie labels more. They don't have the resources to get their records out in stores in a timely manner before the MP3s get leaked. So by the time they manufacture and distribute their 3,000 12"/CD copies, about 1,000 people already have the record. For major labels, they use the MP3s to promote their full length CD projects whether it be a compilation or album project. In my opinion, I've always thought MP3s were a good vehicle to promote the music, but its a double edge sword.
RS: Where did the name "Riddler" come from?
Riddler: Actually from my Program Director and Music Director at KTU -Frankie Blue and Jeff Z. When I first came over to KTU from Z100, Frankie called me into his office and sat down with me. They decided to change my image and my DJ name to the Riddler because it sounded more catchy on the radio. I can't complain because it has worked for my audience and has helped with my marketing.
RS: Your website is incredible - www.djriddler.com - do you keep it updated yourself?
Riddler: Thank you. I try and keep it updated for the most part but yes, I do maintain my site as well as www.albrich.net
RS: And one last question -- what's in your cd player right now?
Riddler: I've been listening to Stevie Wonder - Greatest Hits lately to get some inspiration on our new material. Also, I've been listening to DJ Tiesto's new CD.
