Talk about one for the Global Underground crowd! Even the cover photo looks like it was taken during a shoot for one the famed, world city-named collections. Even though this could be viewed as an obvious attempt to dupe an uninformed music buyer, the buyer would be picking up one of the best programmed CDs within the genre. Kevin Bazell, better known as Kazell, has finely honed his craft over the past 13 years, earning him opening slots for all the major headliners like Sasha, John Digweed, Deep Dish & Sander Kleinenberg. After first working with Sasha & Digweed on their U.S. Northern Exposure Tour in 1995, Kazell was chosen by John Digweed for a guest spot on his prestigious Kiss FM radio show. In addition, Kazell was requested to be the opening DJ when John recorded his Global Underground 019 album at the historic Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles.

One listen to this CD proves how precise Kazell’s sense of programming is. He knows how to use the music to set the perfect mood. This mix constantly leaves the listener thirsty for the next step in his carefully executed, suspenseful progression through layers of percussion & throbbing basslines.

His sound incorporates various styles like electro/breaks, house, tribal, trance & progressive into a tough, cohesive blend that leaves the genre lines forever blurred.

Most mix CDs within this genre feature only 7-8 tracks that are usually 12 minutes in length & all sound the same, but don’t expect that from Kazell. He is truly a master of the mix. The vibe constantly changes as he effortlessly & flawlessly transitions from one track to the next every 3-4 minutes. He also makes it a point to mix in key, even modulating to relative keys at times with each new bassline. (Your classically-trained fans thank you, Kevin!) Standout tracks from Jay Tripwire, Patrick Turner, Silicone Soul, Bjorn Mandry, and Sasha, along with Kazell’s own productions with Mike Hiratzka make this CD shine brightly amidst the dark, cloudy landscape normally associated with the current progressive purveyors. This guy is the deal, so if names like Sasha, Digweed or Kleinenberg mean anything to you, do yourself a favour- buy this CD and make every effort to witness Kazell’s skills in person.
