Jay Jay Johanson has landed on earth bringing his outerworldly fusion of disco and electroclash. Imagine Howard Jones channelling Ziggy Stardust and updating Xanadu for 2003 and you might get an idea of the music.
"Automatic Lover" is the big hype track since it has been featured in the 2Xist underwear commercial and its instant hooks and refrains from "Tommy" will entice you on first listen. AL joins the other pop tracks on the album "Deja Vu," and "On the Radio" as futuristic disco tracks that highlight Jay Jay's gentle voice which transcends the girly boys we are currently being subjected to on the radio.
Quite intriguing also are the broken beat tracks "Kate" and "Tomorrow" which are both tempered with a sorrow that he explores in a touching way that you rarely hear in dance music these days. These feelings are further expressed in "Cookie," which sounds like he was inspred by the 50s-derived drama of Supremes Beings of Leisure.
However, the true highlight is "I Might As Well Continue," the hidden bonus track that starts at 9 minutes into the last track.
Ending with such a masterpiece gives you something exciting to listen to and look forward to eveytime you listen to this album - leave it in your cd player for a few days like I have and you will notice something new and interesting with every listen.
