RS: What was it like working with the rapper for the track?
Colette: Oh he's great. He's really awesome and I actually haven't
met him yet. It was really interesting as we'd been listening a bunch
of the rappers on Om and he's I think one of the newest additions to
the label. He has a really great presence and I loved his voice. What
he did on Funny is amazing and it turned out really well and he's
actually going to perform with us in Chicago, so I'm going to meet him
for the first time when we perform.
RS: Very cool. I noticed you also worked with Lucy Woodward on
the CD, did she produce or did she sing with you or write with you?
Colette: She is one of the writers on "Call It Out." She is such a
fantastic vocalist and songwriter and it was so cool to have her
collaborate on that song. She really made it so much more special.
RS: It seems like dance music has always about the guys
producing and the girls singing, do you think working with her sort of
flipped that a little bit?
Colette: Yes, it definitely did add a different energy to that song
and everyone that I worked with on the track was a man so she was the
only woman that wrote on the track. She added something that was very
different. We'd been working on that song for a while and sometimes
it would come easily and sometimes you love the versus but you don't
love the chorus and she really brought the chorus to such a wonderful
place.
RS: The first single is "About Us," and you've got remixes from
Derrick Carter and Richard Dinsdale. Are you actively involved in
doing the remixes or how much are you involved with that?
Colette: I've always loved Derek, he's a friend of mine and he's one
been inspiring to me for so many years and I just love his production.
And I was really, really excited that he was able to do this remix,
so it was a big deal to me to have him be on that song.
RS: Richard Dinsdale is one of the up and coming really like
sort of fidget, strong, tech house guys. What was it like to work
with him?
Colette: I've been playing a lot of his music and he's one of my
favorite UK producers and I really wanted to work with him. He was
able to do it, so it was totally great.
RS: One of the many things I love about you is the SuperJane
troupe of female DJs that you tour with. You've been doing it for a
couple of years. Has the reaction to it changed over the year or is
it still sort of like the novelty girls with the DJing thing?
Colette: I think for us it was never really like that, our whole
reason for forming the collective was to show that it wasn't a
novelty, that we were playing another one and another one. We
celebrated our ten-year anniversary this year and we did a party in
Miami. People are very respectful of our music and I think the fact
that we're all women is just something that is cool on top of that.
