RS: I read in your bio how you don't like or you don't appreciate the comparisons to 80s artists and how the comparison to Madonna seems, I think your word was inexplicable. But I do have to make one comparison to Madonna, you both have a knack for finding incredible underground or underutilized producers. Her with Mirwais
and William Orbit, you with Spinner and Ron Trent and King Britt. And I've just got to ask, how do you find these guys?
Jody Watley: Well I love Madonna and I do admire that she is always looking outside the box, and I really try to do the same thing. And I seek out good music and with the music that I do, I think I've been attracting a lot of fans that are the same, and so I've just always been on a search. And through my career, even when I was under a lot of pressure to go with the same names and 'well, why not this producer because, you know, they're hot right now?' I just try to find people to collaborate with that will bring something new out of me, and for me that's what it's all about. Each of my records is something different each time and I just want to keep that. Look to the future with me.
RS: I want to do some word association with you, I want you to say the first thing that comes to you mind with some of these guys. Because a lot of people may not know who they are or what they've done, and just working with them what comes to your mind when I say Chris Brann?
Jody Watley: Phenomenal, diverse.
RS: How about Ron Trent?
Jody Watley: Afro, funky, percussive, deep.
RS: Mark De Clive-Lowe?
Jody Watley: UK, Brit, club, from Verve Remix, just again another
diverse, eclectic, can do a bit of it all.
RS: How about 4 Hero?
Jody Watley: Life-changing, inspirational.
RS: How about King Britt?
Jody Watley: A cutey-pie, all music, diverse, can do it all from the dancefloor to taking gospel classics, sister Gertrude and flipping them around.
