Lady Sovereign Interview - Interview with Lady Sovereign

Lady Sovereign

Midget Records

Remixing the ess-oh-vee

RS: Do you have any control or do you choose the remixers who do the remixes on this project?
Lady Sovereign: I get ideas put forward to me but I always pick the one in the end that I want to do the remix and stuff. I'm not just going to have any old remix done, but you've got to cater for everyone sometimes so you've got to pick things which are a bit different. But I always choose them in the end.

RS: On these two recent singles, you’ve used Semothy Jones both times. What about his music do you like?
Lady Sovereign: He’s a friend of mine actually. He makes pretty different stuff and we sit and talk about music like all night. With some of his stuff that he does, he said that I've opened his mind and influenced him to do a lot of things. It’s nice to like bring your friends on board and he knows what I like, so it works out pretty well.

RS: How did you get hooked up with remixer Sinden?
Lady Sovereign: He's the man. I've met him a few times and I flipping love what he does. Every remix he does is gold and he can't do anything wrong, do you know what I mean? He just did a remix of “So Human” which is glitchy and pretty sick, so that'll be floating around pretty soon.

RS: What's it’s like running your own record label, Midget Records?
Lady Sovereign: It’s doing good so far. Obviously I don’t do it all by myself, because that would just be stupid and ridiculous. It’s going good; so far everything’s good.

RS: In addition to being a new sound for you, there's definitely a vibe of old school house and old school techno in your music. Where’s the influence coming from?
Lady Sovereign: I love all that like 1988/89 era old techno and old school house and all that. My uncle DJs all that sort of stuff and my mum was a raver, so growing up there was a lot of that in the house as well. As I've grown up I've learned to love it and I listen to all that stuff all the time. I pretty much listen to everything and I've got no limits because I'm a bit of music junkie and can't stick to one thing. It kind of shows when I make music as well, because I can't really stick to one genre either, so I’m a bit of a crux but it works.

Lady Sovereign hitting the clubs

RS: When you go to a club, what track always gets you dancing?
Lady Sovereign: I don’t dance. I don’t dance at all. When I go in to a club I literally have to have somewhere to sit, drinks, and good company. I will just go there to, like, listen to music, but I won't dance.

RS: What’s your favorite drink?
Lady Sovereign: Vodka and Red Bull, It’s dangerous but it works. Next time I won't drink so much because, oh man, I'm so torn up today.

RS: What's your favorite club track of all time?
Lady Sovereign: Good question. Oh gosh, so many. Oh man, I don’t want to say something just off the top of my head.

RS: Ok, then what’s in your iPod right now that you're listening to?
Lady Sovereign: Everything, I really do listen to everything. I like a lot of Bollywood stuff and I’m listening to that at the moment. I just put some more Two Live Crew on here and some Bart B Moore tracks. It’s just all these remixes I've just been adding recently and yes, yes, more random stuff.

RS: In the past someone’s raised money to buy a date with you. If you could raise money and buy a date with anyone in the world who would it be?
Lady Sovereign: Be careful, Sovereign. Maybe David Beckham, because I've always fancied the pants off him.

RS: Don’t we all?
Lady Sovereign: And I’d just, I’d just like to talk to him about football, you know.

Her favorite lady

RS: If you had to work with another lady to make a record, who would you want to work with – Lady Miss Kier, Lady Gaga, Lady Bunny, or Ladyhawke?
Lady Sovereign: Oh god. Well I wouldn't work with Lady Gaga, f**k that. Sorry, I know a lot of people love her, but I'm not a fan. It would probably be Ladyhawke. I’ve met her a few times. She’s a nice girl and I like her music.

RS: What would you like to say to all the new dance music fans you're getting?
Lady Sovereign: There's a lot more to come but I’m still going to experiment with stuff. I'm going in the studio again and I’ll probably work some more new stuff! Watch for it!
