RS: Another song on your album, The Spell, is that about a
specific person or is there a behind that one?
Second Sun: When I write lyrics, I like to toy around with the idea
of creating characters. The Spell, and it was the same case for
Crush, it starts from something that's personal. A lot of guys are in
this situation where you see a girl in a club and it's a 'what if'
factor. Do I walk up and do I talk to her. I start from these true
feelings that I've had and then I create kind of like a character and
blow it up. With The Spell, it's this guy that decided not to talk to
the girl and the girl goes away, but then he can't stop thinking about
her and she's haunting is dreams and it's kind of like this obsession
thing, which makes it really fun for me.
RS: Cool. It's so nice to hear male vocals on dance records.
Has there been any resistance to you singing on a record versus a
female vocalist?
Second Sun: Absolutely not. We gave the Spell to Paul a while ago,
and at first we were kind of scared of his reaction because he's
obviously known for higher bpm stuff and this was lower bpm all the
way down at 130 and it had a kind of chunkier feel to it. I thought
we were getting fired from his label Vandit, when we first gave him
the track, but instead he really loved the track.
But as far as the male vocals go it was a natural progression because both Adam and I come from a background where we've been playing music since we were kids. Throughout our teenage years, we were in bands, one after the other and, I was singing and playing guitar. So for me being in the dance music arena now, I just thought why not. Why stop myself from singing and doing something we love to do with the right song. So we've done it and we found absolutely no backlash towards that and people have really enjoyed it.
RS: Now for some geek questions, are you Mac or PC?
Second Sun: Mac, a hundred percent Mac.
RS: Do you use Logic or ProTools?
Second Sun: Logic.
RS: For live performances, what do you use?
Second Sun: Ableton Live.
RS: What's your favorite keyboard?
Second Sun: The Virus.
RS: I probably could have guessed that. What's in your CD
player or iPod right now?
Second Sun: Right now? Duran Duran's Greatest Hits.
RS: Is there anything you want to say to all the people out there?
Second Sun: For all the producers and DJs trying to get into dance
music, hand out your music to everyone and don't be afraid about who
you're handing it to. It doesn't matter because the bottom line is
good music is good music and if you hand it to the right people and
your music is quality, then you'll get to where you want to be. For
all the people who love dance music, watch out for us on tour this
summer.
