48th Grammy Nominees - Analysis

By DJ Ron Slomowicz, About.com

Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical

The Killers and Deep Dish both make sense to me as nominations, but I would have nominated different songs by both. Josh Harris' remix of "Somebody Told Me," to me, was the one that deserves the nomination - but I guess that since Madonna isn't eligible this year and Virgin's incompetence with promoting Juliet (surprised to see the Gorillaz doing so well), this was the only way to get Stuart Price (Jacques Lu Cont) a nomination. To me, "Flashdance" should be in the best dance recording and "Say Hello" should be in best remixed. I am surprised that the Paul Van Dyk remix didn't get the nomination based on name brand alone.

Isn't it sad that 3 of the 5 nominees are old "classic" records remixed for label remix packages? I am okay with with the Sarah Vaughan remix - at least that one was played and talked about and was even a bit interesting. Maybe I am disrespecting those who came before me, but I know of no one who listened to, purchased, played or supported the other two.

Personal Favorite: Killers "Mr. Brightside"
Most Likely to Win: Sarah Vaughan "Fever"

Best Dance Recording

Good for LCD Soundsystem - I am glad they got two nominations, this year's indie/electronica darling that the critics like. Their CD is quite good and they are exceptional live, but I can't imagine them winning though. Chemical Brothers' "Galvanize" is a great dance record that shows not all dance music has to be above 120 bpm - though some might say this is a hip-hop record and not a dance record. I disagree with that and am willing to bet that if Dr Dre's name was on it, it would have been a top 10 pop record. "Wonderful Life" is Fatboy Slim's best single in years. "Guilt is a Useless Emotion" is a good song from a great album but I wish Warner US would have gone with "Waiting for the Siren's Call" as the second single - the remixes are so good! Nevertheless, Kylie Minogue will probably win.

Personal Favorite: Fatboy Slim "Wonderful Life"
Most Likely to Win: Kylie Minogue "I Believe in You"

Best Electronic/Dance Album

This one is hard to call. The Fatboy Slim album seemed incredibly uneven while the Daft Punk album was flat out unlistenable if not one of the worst/most disappointing CDs of the year. A nomination for Kraftwerk seems like a Santana nomination, i.e. 'it's 20 years later so let's respect our elders.' The Chemical Brothers album is the most solid. There are some glaring omissions here - Deep Dish, Juliet, Second Sun, Annie...

Personal Favorite: Chemical Brothers - Push the Button
Most Likely to Win: Kraftwerk - MinimumMaximum
