Best Dance Recording
Daft Punk - "Harder Better Faster Stronger"
Hot Chip - "Ready For The Floor"
Lady Gaga & Colby O'Donis - "Just Dance"
Madonna - "Give It 2 Me"
Rihanna - "Disturbia
Sam Sparro - "Black & Gold"
Reaction: The Grammy awards often seem to award those who are overlooked in the past or for their musical history rather than their current nominated work (ie Louie Vega in 2006 or Benny Benassi in 2008.) Daft Punk's "One More Time" was nominated in 2002 but lost to Janet Jackson's "All For You," while "Harder Better Faster Stronger" was not nominated. Fast forward to 2008 and a rerecorded live version gets the nomination and wins. This has happened before - Tina Turner being nominated and winning for "Better Be Good to Me" both in 1984 (for original release) and 1988 (for live version) in the Best Rock Female Vocal Performance category.
Daft Punk should give this award to Kanye West who sampled this song on his hit single "Stronger." Their performance on last year's award show probably helped immensely with this win as well. A lot of people assumed Rihanna would win this category since she was the biggest pop artist in the category (see Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson.) While I am happy to see that a true electronic artist won this award, its kind of sad that it seems to require a hip hop artist to sample an electronic record in order to make it relevant to the mainstream audience.
Best Electronic/Dance Album
Brazilian Girls - New York City
Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Cyndi Lauper - Bring Ya To The Brink
Kylie Minogue - X
Moby - Last Night
Robyn - Robyn
Reaction: See above - its basically the same analysis. The Kanye West sample of Daft Punk brought the record to the bigger audience. I would have loved to see Robyn or Kylie get this award, but neither had a major US presence touring this year - so outside the critics and those "in the know," it was off the radar. I guess Robyn made a mistake choosing to work with Snoop instead of Kanye.
Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical
Ne-Yo - "Closer" (StoneBridge Radio Edit)
MGMT - "Electric Feel" (Justice Remix)
Madonna - "4 Minutes" (Junkie XL Remix)
Mary J Blige - "Just Fine" (Moto Blanco Remix)
Morgan Page featuring Lissie - "The Longest Road" (Deadmau5 Remix)
Reaction: Honestly, this one could have gone to anyone. I think basically it came down to votes being split. All of the R&B/Pop people split their votes between Ne-Yo, Mary, and Madonna while all of the alternative/indie people stood behind MGMT. Its great that Morgan Page got a nomination as he is incredibly talented and this will bring his work to a bigger audience - so he might end up being the biggest winner of the night.
