Artist Panel 2007 - Billboard Dance Music Summit 2007 / VME

Since I was out until 3am last night watching incredible live performances and have to be awake in 5 hours, the chances of me coherently writing original thoughts are quite slim. So instead, here is a summary of today through the quotes of others.

Making the Brand

"Feist is the new Dirty Vegas"
- Bonnie Dolan (Comma Music)

"A lot of advertising is perception"
- Josh Rabinowitz (Grey Worldwide)

"Its all about experiential branding."
- Brian Feit (BMF Media)

Trans Europe Express

"Production slows down in June and December/January - which is right when touring picks up. The two balance each other."
- Chris Cox

"I will book DJs based on their promotion - sending out text messages and emails, DJs who will bring a crowd with them."
- Gino Lapinto

"Added spice to a good dish of macaroni."
- Frankie Anobile - referring to live artists who perform with a DJ

"For DJs to make it they have to be artists and produce. You also have to be a savvy marketer to sell what you bring to the table and sets you apart from others."
- Chris Cox

"I don't deal with diva DJs especially when there are so many DJs of equal or better value are available"
- Gino Lapinto

"Demo CDs are like drugs. Give people the first taste, get them hooked and they constantly want more and will book you."
- Chris Cox

"DJing is just like politics. You have to mobilize your base and bring your voters out."
- Kerri Mason

On the Radio

"For the year 2007, there hasn't been a dance record to cross to mainstream this year."
- Cary Vance (Promo Only)

"I think we need less good music. There is no bad music or good music - it's all subjective."
- Gary Salzman (BIG Entertainment)

"Get your record to idiots and crackheads and it will be successful."
- Cary Vance (Promo Only)

"I need a mix that works for my audience. The name on it doesn't mean crap."
- Rod Carillo (KNRJ)

"Of 170 stations on XM Radio, the third most popular based on TSL (Time spent listening) is BPM"
- Skyy (XM Radio)

"You have a tail, go chase it. You aren't going to get anywhere with this."
- Gary Salzman (BIG Entertainment)

"I am a missionary and trying to bring people to my religion. If it takes a Timbaland record to get someone into a Deborah Cox record..."
- Rod Carillo (KNRJ)

Voices Carry - the artist panel

"I don't want to watch a video and see the same thing on stage. I want to see you sing to me."
- Evelyn Champagne King

"Just because you are not on a major label doesn't mean your music is of less value."
- Jody Watley

"Playing in Vegas - you have to compete with slot machines."
- Kristine W
