Wow, Ultra, it’s hard to know where to start on this one. I guess I’ll start with the high ticket price, ridiculous lines, and aggressive security. After the hour and a half wait to get my ticket and to security, I was turned away for not throwing away my nice digital camera, despite any previous mention of this being a problem (it wasn’t a problem anywhere else). [Editor's note - Though it wasn't mentioned on the website, hard flyers stated that cameras and backpacks would not be allowed.] So, after another hour of going to the car and back, I was finally inside. There were so many people and so much going on; I didn’t know where to begin.

After enjoying wandering stage to stage aimlessly for awhile, I found a schedule. Much to my surprise, I had missed the main amphitheatre. I had assumed the Ultra Soundstage to be the main stage. So, off I went to the main arena. As I rounded the corner of the amphitheater, my jaw dropped and my eyes began to tear up. It was beautiful and endless sea of party goers swaying to the progressive sounds of Oakie. The sound and visuals were un-fucking-believable! Towers of sound were suspended by cranes, quite possibly the largest, clearest soundstage I’ve ever seen. Walls of video lined the back of the stage, while strobes and lasers filled any other available space.

I managed to catch most of my wish list that wonderful evening. Even though I was only able to catch chunks of most of the sets, the combined experience was more than I ever could have dreamed. My clear favorites of the night were Adam F/Craze, Rabbit in the Moon, Hybrid, and BT. Not only was I able to catch them all at the top of their game amidst an amazing crowd, but it all took place in one night. All of the hassles and costs associated with the journey were now paid in full. Ultra was the perfect explosion at the end of a three day crescendo.
