There are a few personal traditions for WMC. Running into Benny Benassi on Collins. Seeing Georgie Porgie get a crowd riled up. Gawking at bedazzled skull shirts on Washington avenue. Hearing Barbara Tucker sing her anthem "Most Precious Love." Then I realized, oh snap, I missed Barbara at every performance this week. Madonna may have 4 minutes to save the world, but I only had 5 hours to hear "Most Precious Love."
Luckily I started the day well rested, which in Miami is a rarity and almost painful considering all the great parties I missed last night. But I've got a few final hours on South Beach so I planned an itinerary to catch as much as possible - Peter Rauhofer, Breaksfest, Qburns and Kristine W - before catching a shuttle to the airport.
The always charming and sexy Alan T was working the door at Mansion, ushering the circuit boys into the dark world of tribal. Peter Rauhofer was rocking the decks with his hot remixes of tracks like Laura Kidd's "Automatic" and Madonna's "4 Minutes." The shirtless horde chanted and screamed in appreciation.
Kicking myself for missing Stanton Warriors the night before I decided to catch some of the Breaksfest at the Catalina. Now I would normally expect to dance to breakbeat in a darkroom for afterhours (years at eXceSs/Orbit here in Nashville cemented that notion), but the red carpet and capsule chairs in the hotel lobby acted as a nice counterbalance to the everpresent sunlight. The gorgeous Discobunny was on the decks and dropped some sick mashups ("Creeps") into a slick set of funky breaks.
I ran into headliner Uberzone and chatted with him about the tagteam set he did with DJ Dan Friday at Am/Made/PaChaCha. He said he was nervous as they just decided to do it a few hours before they went on. Little did they know that the merging of their two styles would birth one of the most inspired sets of the week. UZ was spinning a set just before he had to catch a planed back home and into the studio. He is working on a bunch of projects including a Lee Coombs remix - cannot wait for that one.
