Three sides of this Fantasy Records’ set were recorded live at last March’s tribute concert at the San Francisco Opera House, while the final side is a studio job featuring Sylvester’s hottest cut since “Dance, Disco Heat,” – “Can’t Stop Dancing.”
One reason this two-record set triumphs is that it reveals many sides of Sylvester’s personality. In OUT’s recent interview, Sylvester admitted, “I love to dance, jump around, and carry on.” His sense of fun definitely comes through on the new record, as it has every time I’ve seen his show live.
Proud self-confidence is another facet of his character: “I’m satisfied doing what I do,” as he puts it. But there is also a warm, tender being underneath all that raz-ma-taz and confidence. “I enjoy staying at home, cooking, and cleaning house, and especially being in love!” This side of the artist comes across in the tender ballads on the album-particularly in his beautiful version of Patti LaBelle’s “You Are My Friend.”
