M-AUDIO Torq Xponent - Advanced DJ Performance/Production System Review

From Isaac McCalla, for About.com

Xponent and Torq

M-Audio

The Xponent/Torq DJ system is a MIDI-control surface and sound card for Torq DJ software. Xponent's all-in-one approach gives the user tactile, fun, and convenient control of Torq's software capabilities. The one-piece Xponent measures 18" x 12" and offers the functionality of 2 CDJs, mixer, sampler, effects rack, sound card (audio outs only), and MIDI interface (1 x 1). Without feeling cramped, the Xponent packs major features into a modest footprint. The Xponent connects to either a MAC or PC via a USB connection and is powered by a separate (included) AC adaptor. The system, designed by the Syncroscience Design Group and manufactured by M-Audio, has the appeal of high function and style.

My quick read of the Xponent/Torq is that it's well-lit for nightclub use, has an easy to use layout, offers everything you need to DJ and more, replaces a pile of conventional gear, is on the lightweight side for build quality, looks good, sounds good, and is fun to use. Although the Xponent can be used with any DJ software that does MIDI mapping, it is specifically built for use with Torq software, which is included with the Xponent.

Considering that separate CD-Js, turntables, mixers, and sound cards can quickly run into the thousands of dollars, the Xponent/Torq street price of $600 is appealing. Obviously the right laptop will drive your cost higher. Even so, it is more expensive, and in some instances impossible, to get all of the features available with an Xponent/Torq system with conventional gear. Having a controller, MIDI interface, and audio out sound card via one USB port is nice and simple. Although not cheap, the Xponent system is competitively priced for what it offers.
