Stanton Uberstand Laptop Stand Review

DJ booths are not known for being perfectly laid out or spacious. They are often designed around two turntables, a mixer, and a monitor speaker. If there's an extra table or room to move around, DJs consider themselves blessed. With the advent of laptops as performance tools, DJs have to find ways to adapt the booth to fit their needs. A solid laptop stand assists with this greatly.

What is it?

The Stanton Uberstand is a laptop stand designed with the DJ in mind. Stored flat with the dimensions of an album (so it fits in a standard record bag), the Uberstand unfolds quickly to be either a three tiered stand (when used on a flat table) or a two tiered stand (when placed over a turntable.)

Testing

Opening the black nylon bag, the metal stand is flat. The top and bottom tier swing forwards and the middle tier pops into grommeted holes. Assembly couldn't be easier, its just flip, flip and click - then it's ready to go. The Uberstand is aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel - making it durable and insanely stable. With a month's use and abuse, the metal is still shining. When in use, it withstands the bass rumbling of a monitor speaker as well as bumps and jostles.

The middle tier can be placed in three positions depending on the size of gear you are using. I normally have it on a flat surface with a MIDI controller on the first tier, my external hard drive and sound card on the second tier, and my laptop on the top tier. My big 17" Mac Book Pro is supported safely and in a stable manner on the top shelf. Included pieces of velcro prevent slippage. Reusable twist ties also prevent the pivot from going back too much.

Critiques

When a unit is so perfectly designed and simple to use, it's hard to come up with a critique. The only critique I have would be a caution to check the height of the table and the height of the Uberstand. If the table is above your waist and then you put the Uberstand on top of it, it might be too high for you to use it ergonomically. Rather than suffering from the "DJ hunch" from leaning over a turntable you might develop an arm crick from reaching up.

Conclusion

The Stanton Uberstand is rugged, easy-to-transport, perfectly designed and made with the DJ in mind. I saw a fellow DJ using one and ordered one online the next day. I've used it at every gig ever since and its worked like a charm. There are very few products that I could recommend so whole heartedly to every laptop musician out there. Now if only everything made for laptop DJs was designed so perfectly...
