Walking into my first 18 and over club in 1986, I immediately fell in love. In my case, it wasn’t love at first sight, but rather love at first ‘listen’. Until I walked through those doors, I didn’t know there were extended versions or such a thing as a remix to the songs I heard on the radio or on my albums. But once inside those doors, every minute I was there, it was my kind of heaven. My regular visits were never about the scene, but always about the music – dancing and just listening.

Purchasing my first 12” single (ABC – King Without A Crown) shortly afterwards, I couldn’t begin to build up my collection fast enough. Soon I discovered Dance Music Authority Magazine and whatever remix charted or received a good review, I purchased it. I was so excited every payday knowing that I would be heading to the local record store and coming home with treasures.

I begin working in different clubs – as the doorman, working the counter, coat check and regularly as a featured dancer. When I wasn’t working, you could always find me in the DJ booth digging through the records and watching the mixing magic. As my music collection continued to grow, I began to see dance music in a new light – not just as exciting and energetic, but as beautiful and personal. Through the years, many songs have fallen into this category and continue do so, but none can touch what I consider the best example of beautiful dance music – Rose Laurens ‘American Love’.

In my head, I often dissect a remix and break it down element by element. When I was first given an opportunity to put my thoughts on paper in the form of a review, I jumped at the chance. Being able to listen to ‘my’ music and then write about it continues to be a dream come true.

The people involved in making the music, supporting the music and working behind-the-scenes continue to be the most amazing people I meet. Discussing a new track, an up and coming remixer, or a diva returning from hiding is normal jargon in this circle – here you aren’t speaking a foreign language.

I hope you enjoy my reviews that are part of About.com. You can find additional reviews on the websites of DJ Rico Mixshow and Sarah Atereth.

Never stop dancing. Take time to listen to the music.
