Lisa Lashes, The Queen of Hard Dance, is going digital with a new download service as she travels the world spreading her love of all things hard and dirty. Her Lashed parties and frenetic DJ schedule keeps her on the infamous DJ list, but its her wit and charm that make her so much fun to dance with.
DJ Ron Slomowicz: Where does that name come from?
Lisa Lashes: When I was at school people used to call me lashes because I've got extraordinarily long eyelashes. My makeup artist today said she's never put mascara on eyelashes as long as mine.
DJ Ron: So can we expect a modeling contract out of this as well?
Lisa Lashes: This is what I've been going for - Rimmel, L'Oreal, MAC - you too can have lashes like Lashes. That's what I've been trying to go for.
DJ Ron: Congratulations on making top ten on the DJ list. How did you react when you first heard?
Lisa Lashes: That was a bit ago, but it felt really good. I wanted to take it in stride. I didn't really want to be number one because a lot of my friends like the other DJs. I felt kind of embarrassed because you don't want to say ha-ha, I'm better than you. I try to play it down a little bit but of course it's always going to be a good thing, isn't it?
DJ Ron: When you spin are you playing on vinyl or CD or laptop?
Lisa Lashes: I'm still vinyl at the moment, plastic girl I am. Now and then, I do CDs. Actually, this past weekend I played six or seven CDs which is a very big effort for me because I love vinyl. I like the feel of vinyl, the sound and the heaviness - I don't carry my record box so I like to see the people struggle in with it going into the club. <laughing>
DJ Ron: Do you think it's harder for ladies to break into the DJ scene?
Lisa Lashes: Well, what do you think? In a way, yes, because the DJ scene is male-dominated, but I think if you're good at what you do and are ballsy - otherwise you'll get walked all over- but I can't really say, because at the moment there are so many males and there's not many females coming through. There was a bunch of females like five years ago, but it seems like we've taken up the spaces and there doesn't seem to be as many girl DJs coming through as there are men at the moment. But hopefully, the girls are going to get a manicure and go and play on the decks because I may need to retire very soon.
DJ Ron: Why would you want to retire?
Lisa Lashes: I'm not going to, I am just kidding.
DJ Ron: Lord, don't scare me like that.
Lisa Lashes: Alright. Promise.
DJ Ron: You seem to always be on tour, do you have any residencies back at home?
Lisa Lashes: Well I don't have residencies as such, but I do a lot of events with Godskitchen, Slinky, all the Tidy stuff and the big festivals. I don't think DJs do residencies as much now because they have to do everything that comes up and they're abroad so much.
DJ Ron: What was the inspiration for your Lashed parties?
Lisa Lashes: Probably Roman He's now driving my car home because I've had a bit too much to drink. The inspiration is we want to have fun and put a party that is different from anywhere else. When we do the Lash parties we bring the décor, we'll bring the fun and I bring the music with the DJs and stuff. If you're going to put your name to a brand you've got to do everything rather than just play records really. The inspiration is years and years of clubbing, taking in what's going on around and going forward.
