RS: Let’s talk about your original productions. Tell me about the song you did with Rachel Panay.
Josh: The song that we did, it’s called “Back To Love”, it was a song that I actually had lying around for a few years. I had basically the first verse and the hook of the song which I then tried to write and finish with Faith Trent, because she was on Tommy Boy and I was trying to work on some stuff with her. It never happened so I basically stripped it back to what it was prior to my writing sessions with Faith. When I met Rachel and heard her CD, I thought she had a really nice voice. I didn’t feel that her voice had been properly recorded in terms of what she could do vocally. I’m not dissing anybody or knocking anybody but for whatever reason she just wasn’t able to get in the studio and get a vocal take that I think really represented her skills. So I gave her the song to listen, she liked it, and I felt like she was the right singer for it. In December of 2003, we recorded the vocals up here in New York. I’m very happy with the way it came out and I think it’s a nice commercial record. Here I am sort of sounding like I’m contradicting myself, I’m actually doing all of the mixes on the project.
RS: And so you're being schizophrenic and have four different sounds.
Josh: Right, but I’m only going to do this once and I look at it as a challenge. I have never really seen how many areas I could split my creative brain into. There’s going to be about five or six different mixes and I hope that people like them, I mean it’s not an ego thing at all. I felt that, given the situation with the record, that I was going to put a lot of effort into the mixes and I felt that was a better situation than Act 2 records paying some people that might not give it their all.
RS: OK. So right now that’s your new project coming out. What do you have coming next, what are you in the studio working on right now?
Josh: Right now? I have done a couple of spec pop mixes. My most recent thing that I finished is a pop mix of Britney Spears’ “Outrageous”, for Jive.
RS: I love it. Every person I speak to is working on a Britney remix right now.
Josh: Isn’t that funny?
