Julius: Right, and what's interesting about keeping a CD like that not sounding dated by the time it comes out, it's a little tricky. Because when you think about it, some of the music a lot of guys get, anybody from say Little Lois to other super star DJs and producers, even though they may release mix CDs themselves, and of course they do. Some of that is hard because you get stuff and it comes out down the line a few months later, so even though something may not even be out or maybe it just came out and you might have only got it even a month or two it's still considered a new song. It'll be out maybe four or five months later, so you're looking at half a year time difference. Now if you'd scored some tracks like I did that may only come out three or four months down the line that means that's good but some of these things are so dated you have to do something about that. I like the tracks that don't sound dated and are timeless so it doesn't matter whether it comes out six months later or whether it's new or not, it still sounds fresh and it's an exciting track kind of thing.
DJ B: So when did you start this project and when did you actually put it
to bed and hand it over to the folks at Loveslap for packaging and all the
rest of that?
Julius: Yes, well this one kind of came about pretty quick. I mean he
was talking about it for several months, it was in the works. However,
getting the whole ball rolling and saying OK we have to start now, here's
the deadline, I need this project completed in x amount of time I think it
took no more than a month really by the time he said "OK let's roll on it,
in other words I do want to do the second volume Julius, you are the man to
mix it, select the tracks, let's go." So I mean it was kind of quick, I
kind of picked the track within a week or so, maybe two weeks, got all the
ammunition and then just kind of arranged them. I did the arrangement,
actually in the mix in one day, believe it or not. Not that it sounds like
it could take longer and sometimes it can because sometimes at home I'll do
a mix CD and pass then out to friends as copies, as free gifts, sometimes
extra promo. But when you have a mix CD come out commercially you want
everything to be perfect more or less or you'd like to have it perfect or
what you'd consider it to be perfect. So I did it really quick, I just got
stuff, mixed it and was pretty happy with it, the arrangement was there and
I didn't really change anything. So the way I gave it to Spencer is the
way it's coming out, so that's pretty cool. And that was a day to do it
and maybe a week and a half to pick the songs, and then it was done and it
was December. And he's been working overtime to get everything online for
its March release.
DJ B: Yes, you're going out on March 8th, it looks from what I have here.
Julius: That's the latest I heard, yes.
DJ B: So what are you doing or planning on doing to promote the CD
besides doing interviews like this, are you going to take any of this out
on the road, are you going to do any live shows in the Bay area?
Julius: Yes, that's typical. Nowadays with the whole dance market is
kind of going through a change in terms of the whole nightlife. The sound
is changing, what people are dancing to more and more is changing, how many
people go out during the week is changing and has been changing. So have
something come out like a mix CD helps to promote the CD and also keeps
your profile up. And therefore we are going to be booking special dates to
feature the CD. Hopefully we're going to get the tour together. As we
speak we're collecting dates.
DJ B: We'd love to have you come to Nashville. We have a DJ here who's the indie buyer for Tower who has a regular monthly dance party called Audity Central. And from reading your bio stuff, it looks like that you're at least acquainted with Jay-J, right? Julius Yes.
DJ B: So Jay-J's been out here for Tim's Audity Central parties and I'm
not sure if he's had Miguel out here or not, I want to say no but it's
possible, he's done so many of these dates over the years, he's had lots
and lots of folks come. So if you're thinking about doing, I wouldn't say
east coast, but like a south central, I'm pretty sure we can find a spot
for you to come, especially if you could make it out on the last Friday of
the month.
Julius: Well I'll be honest with you, I have never been to Nashville. And
you're actually right, Jay-J has been in Nashville and he's told me about
it and said, to my surprise, that it's actually a pretty fun party. Because
when I think of Nashville I think of country music so?
