Static Revenger Interview - DJs Are Alive

RS: So who's singing the male vocal parts on "Gimme Some Love?"
Static Revenger: The backgrounds are Jesse and the foregrounds are D:Fuse.

RS: So you, as the male vocalist from Charm Farm, aren't singing anywhere on it, are you saving your vocals for the second single?
Static Revenger: I've got some other music and that's the thing, everybody in the group does their own music and contributes to this project. I think that one of the things that's making it work with these five huge personalities - no one's coming in to this with an agenda, everyone's happy to see where they naturally fit in. So I don't know if there'll be a vocal performance in this for me, if it happens and it's appropriate sure, but it's not on my to-do list.

RS: Initial press on the DJs Are Alive seemed to play-up these quotes about laptop DJs being so boring to watch, do you care to comment on that?
Static Revenger: Well, laptop DJs are boring to watch, there's no contesting that and we're not coming out against laptop DJs. Here's what sums it up. I was out to drinks with the President of Native Instruments who makes Traktor, and we were watching a guy do a laptop set. He leaned over to me and said these laptop sets, they have to stop somehow, this is not right. It is a bold statement from the President of Traktor but it's up to them to develop something tactile and interesting. A lot of people are using laptops with Serato and turntables and if that's the way they want to carry their music around that's cool.

BT, who's a laptop guy is doing phenomenal music when he plays live, producing the tracks but the thing is no one knows it. You could be doing your taxes for all I know, why don't they get some monitors up and have people be able to see what you're doing. Laptops made it too easy for everybody to be too lazy, that's all. I'm not saying it's a good performance, I'm not saying it's not musical because some people are doing a lot of musical magic on it. I'm just saying it's a guy upfront on a laptop and that's just boring.

RS: Cool. So let's play some free association. I'm going to say a name and say the first thing that comes to your mind. We'll start with D:Fuse.
Static Revenger: John Wayne.

RS: Scumfrog.
Static Revenger: <laughing> Boss.

RS: Kristine.
Static Revenger: The Diva chanteuse prodigy.

RS: Skribble.
Static Revenger: Wow, a lot came to mind just there. All I can say is Brooklyn.

RS: My Space seems to be an important part of getting the word out there on the band. What effect do you think MySpace is going to have in spreading the word of DJs are Alive?
Static Revenger: I think MySpace is great about spreading the word about a lot of things. I'm relatively new to it, it's been about four months. My concern is that, MySpace is so good about spreading the news on so many things that how do you start to differentiate. On my Static Revenger page, I have 350 friends and I don't really know what most of them are doing.

Why its taken me so long to get into Myspace is anytime I've been involved in internet networking, it's typically been a bunch of lowest common denominator knuckleheads. But MySpace is the total opposite, the majority of the people are pretty decent. What's been impressing me so far is the types of people that it gets the word out to. I've met a lot of really kick-ass DJs and producers, super talented, who make really good music. So I'm excited to finally be a part of the culture, but there is so much out there that it's hard to differentiate.

RS: There's so much media around, its difficult to filter just what you are interested in.
Static Revenger: How does anybody get to care about DJs are Alive on MySpace. There's probably 300 of us that are friends and many are DJs and bands. So three hundred people are trying to get you to care about their music while you're trying to get them to care about yours. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. Not only for us, but for Myspace in general.

RS: Exactly. Is there anything you want to say to all your fans out there?
Static Revenger: Yes, to my brother and my mum, hello.

RS: Seriously though, to all the people who buy Static Revenge records, everyone who's going to be checking DJs are Alive shows, what do you want to shout at them?
Static Revenger: The same thing I say to them when I see them face to face. My music means a lot to me and it means the world to me that they tune in, pay attention and participate. I thank them a lot and hope to give everybody more good music in 2006.
