No matter where you turned this past year, it seems that there was no escaping the influence of Armin Van Buuren. Early this year I reviewed his third studio album Imagine and then the release of his much-anticipated mix compilation A State of Trance 2009 which kept Armin busy with promoting and touring. It was also during this time that we saw the continuation of his long-running radio show, also named A State of Trance, and was once again voted the number one DJ in DJ Mag's annual Top 100 vote for 2009. So what does an overachiever do when they have accomplished so much already in such a limited amount of time? In Armin Van Buuren’s case, you go out and continue to do what has made you so successful so far and that is evident in his newest album titled Universal Religion: Chapter 4.

Universal Religion: Chapter 4 is the latest installment of the popular compilation series which showcases Armin at his best- when he plays live at Club Amnesia in Ibiza every summer. It is here that we are introduced to some of the newest and most exclusive tracks and remixes in the trance and progressive world for 2009, as mixed by one of the top talents in the field. The album begins with the illustrious remix of BT’s “Every Other Way,” which features the blissful vocals of Jes, which starts the compilation into absolute euphoria. Armin's remix of "Beggin' You" by Cerf, Mitiska, and Jaren is another amazing tune that invokes a certain jungle vibe by melding exquisite melodic sounds with the enchanting vocals of Jaren that will definitely send shivers throughout your whole body. Those two tracks tend to be the best on this series but the other songs hold up well. These two tracks are comfortably mixed in with such remixes like Armin’s “Gaia – Tuvan” by Gareth Emery, a surprising collaboration between Roger Shah and Signum on “Healsville Sanctuary,” and the unexpected return of RAM with his excellent track “RAMsterdam.”

That’s not all, because Armin also includes fresh gems by such artists as Lange and Andy Moor, Daniel Kandi, and Nic Chagall. I have to say that there is not a single weak entry in this collection and it becomes even more inspired when the live crowd interaction can be heard in response to the amazing set provided.

Summary

Overall, the transition between each tune on “Universal Religion: Chapter 4” is incredibly smooth and flawless and provides for an amazing listening experience. Armin has provided an album that actually captures the magic and essence of Ibiza and Club Amnesia and gives those people at home a chance to be a part of that magical moment whenever they desire. This is definitely the album to add to your collection if you’re are an avid Armin Van Buuren fan or anyone who appreciates and delights in amazing club music. Even with the recent release of such popular albums like Armin’s own A State of Trance 2009 and Volume by Paul van Dyk, Universal Religion: Chapter 4 happens to be the best representative this year of great club music and the future of trance.

Released October 2009 on Napith/Armada Records.
