Bravery - An Honest Mistake

The 80's are alive and well in the world of The Bravery. Instantly I'm taken back to dance-oriented 80's underground rock. In the music, you'll hear shades of Love Tractor, Pylon, Gang of Four and The Smiths. Vocally, Sam Endicott delivers words from his tortured soul in a style similar to Joy Division. The image: sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, as well as plenty of hair gel and smudge proof mascara. And since it's now 2005, they've added lovely shades of lip gloss as well. It's worked in the past and works now. This song talks about relationship screw-ups and downs. "People, they don't mean a thing to you / They move right through you / Just like your breath / Sometimes I still think of you / And I just wanted to / Just wanted you to know / My old friend / I swear I never meant for this / Don't look at me that way / It was an honest mistake." All hail the sensitive rocker.

The only remix here is the Superdiscount remix (Etienne de Crecy) and it's a hectic, nervous affair. It fits the vibe of the original well- but just don't expect any world-class remixer sounds. It is what it is: a punkish single from new era of rockers, exploring the realms of introversion and excess. I bet these guys are kinky. And bet they are a rockin' fun act to see live. They are gonna need better remixes than this if they care at all about crossing into dancefloor electronica. Love them just the same.
