Calanit - Sculptured

When the dub is the best single from the lot, something’s not right. Unfortunately this is the case here. You guys have all heard songs like this one right… blonde, white girls with no vocal range, half speaking, half “singing” along to predictable lyrics, and to top things off, a cheesy sung melody ala Amber’s "Sexual." I could name names here to better give you examples, but why waste webspace.

The dub from the Suryanto and Micalizzi Mix is the only saving grace here. It thankfully includes no real vocals (wonder why?) but does a good job on the production side with a dark, delayed bass synth driving the track along.

The vocal mix, like the others on the release, all suffer from the white-girl syndrome I spoke about. Having said that, I’ll try to focus my attention to the production aspect of the other mixes… here goes.

Flipside has a real pumping, synth-heavy, almost Euro mix here. It reminds me very much of Benny Benassi’s work. Going in the same direction is the Calanit vs Used and Abused Mix, which actually includes a Benassi sample. They give the track a much groovier, brighter feel than Flipside.

Airbase includes a hard trance mix that you’d typically find with this type of vocal. I’m personally not a big fan of these type of mixes with their calculated key changes and epic breakdowns that drain the floor of its juice. Many would disagree with me though.

Chris Salt’s mix includes little to no vocals but moves along nicely with its dreamy style. It jumps the fence from slightly breakbeat to overtly progressive house and does it without ever sounding cheezy. This and the dub from Suryanto and Micalizzi are really the only two tracks worth mentioning here.
