The latest edition in the DJ Kicks series features Grant Marshall, aka Daddy G, on the mixing duties, and while the name might not be familiar to you, you most certainly have heard some of the exceptional music he has had a hand in influencing or creating himself. He is generally acknowledged as one of the founding forces behind the Bristol sound (i.e. Smith and Mighty, Tricky, Portishead), and has been a vital contributor to the scene since the early 1980s. One of the founding members of the Wild Bunch Sound System and Massive Attack, as well as a legendary DJ, Daddy G blends bits and pieces of his many influences into a sonic journey of the first degree.
On this disc, he digs deep into his back collection and brings out a ton of classic old school gems. From the absolutely amazing "Non Non Non" by Melaaz to the silky reggae flavor of "Here I Come" by Barrington Levy and the excellent Danny Krivit edit of "Rock Steady" by Aretha Franklin, this is a superb mix from front to back. One of my favorite driving around discs and a truly remarkable collection of top tunes. Much respect to Daddy G, Massive Attack and the brilliant Bristol sound.
