A big Narcotic Thrust mix rules this group of remixes, offering an energetic house mix using chord structure similar to "When The Dawn Breaks." Narcotic Thrust (aka Andy Morris/Stuart Crichton) create an uplifted, happy bed of music to contrast Gahan's brooding, romantic style. The contrast works really well here, and sets it apart from the other mixes. Nothing wrong with dark atmosphere, especially with Depeche Mode, and Tiga takes it there with his techy vocal and dub mixes. Both mixes are deep in techno/electro land, and Tiga drops the bomb with the piano drop, which is reminiscent of the chords in the Mode's own "Enjoy the Silence." As they say, Brilliant. The dub is great listening too. Alter Ego puts in a breakbeat version heavy on the distortion and guitars, taking it to leftfield.
A Metrope vocal mix has a strong electro vibe; a minimal tech groove peppered with distortion effects. Their dub treatment bears no resemblance to the original, just an odd tech-funk dub track. The M83 remix sounds like it came right out of 1984, otherwise it's pretty bland. The Dirty Monkey remix is very strong, with it's big, chugging beat, and groove layered with Gahan's sultry vocals. (It sounds like Josh Harris or Peter Rauhofer to me, I don't know who the Dirty Monkey is.) It's hard to decide if this one or the Narcotic mix is the best. Overall a good single from Depeche Mode, paired with these remixes and a video directed by Anton Corbijn, is further proof of these guys' talent and staying power. Tiga brings edgy electro remixes, Dirty Monky delievers a groovy bouncer, and Narcotic Thrust clocks in with a heavenly progressive remix.
