Could this be the year of the Greeks? The year started off with Despina Vandi putting Ancient Greece back on the map with the hit single "Gia." Then they were the hosts of the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens. Now to graciously top the year off, Despina Vandi is back with her sophomore single "Opa Opa." But the sophomore jinx didnt catch on with her as she has another hit single on her hands. People who arent Greek can associate the term "Opa Opa" with it commonly being used in the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
But the only thing that is big and fat about this single is success it will breed. Despina stays true to her roots once more and keeps the ethnic Greek flavor in this song that includes everything the Greeks are known for except the lamb over the fire. Speaking of fire, what is really on fire are the Remixes of this awesome, belly dancing song. Milk and Sugar use less if any of the vocal and reach for the guitar strings and pull the international flare out of this track on the Radio and Club Vocal Mix. Armand Van Heldens Club and Dub Mixes gives this track a little more of a nasty edge to it and kicks it up a notch. The best mix is the Bass Bumpers Club Mix. The breakdown and chants are powerful and the build up creates energy specifically targeted for the dancefloors. On the CD single, the Chipe Mix and the video rounds everything out. Its time to do a shot, have some lamb, get on the dancefloor and get ready for a party. The Greeks certainly know something about a party. After all, werent they one of the first civilizations on this earth?
