A freestyle Christmas song in 2008
Yes, dance cover versions of holiday songs are almost inherently cheesy. Putting the cd of Evelyn Demille's version of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas" (purchase/download) into my computer, I was expecting the worst. The acapella intro caught my attention - I know this voice. She sounds so familiar and I just couldn't place it.
Then "that freestyle stutter kick drum" kicks in and I realize that Evelyn must be either a member of Expose or a Cover Girl. Some searching online uncovers the myspace page for Evelyn DeMille, which I figure out is a "pseudo name," or pseudonym for Evelyn Escalera, one of the members of the Cover Girls.
Even though the production is definitely freestyle inspired, there is a modern feel to it. Evelyn sounds great in the lead vocals but the background vocals sounds a little dated. The musical production is definitely energetic and fits the vocals.
Evelyn's take on "All I Want For Christmas" will no doubt sound good on Z100, WKTU and Pulse radio stations in New York as well as any holiday party for 30-somethings feeling nostalgic for the days of freestyle.
