Ferry Corsten - LEF

Ultra

Ferry Corsten fans will buy this album without question, so any reviewers' assessments as to whether it's any good or not are pretty irrelevant. Thus this review is mainly for the folks aren't really into the Rotterdammer but were still surprised by how much they liked "Rock Your Body Rock."

Is it worth checkin' out? Yes, certain tracks are, says I. And which ones are they? Well, "Fire" for one, the simply-structured intense ditty which has a few of the familiar sonic tricks Corsten's known for and has been all over the charts the last few months. "Down on Love" combines the pleasantly lazy female vocals of Oz with the chimey guitars reminiscent of 80s bands like The Alarm or The Cure, and "Freefalling," with its epic structure anchored by Eno synths that sound close enough to be a Radiohead composition. There's a few pleasant Royksopp-sounding tunes, including the beautiful lament "Into the Dark" and the Kylie Minogue-approached "Forever." And even amongst the "traditional techno" cuts, with their giant fuzzy synth chords washing across the audio landscape, there's a few that outsiders might concede at least have some musical credence. "Beautiful" and "Prison Break Theme" (the latter from the Fox television program) are some examples, dreamy kick-drum thumpers complete with minor melodies and processed voices that let the listener get lost in imaginary raves set in the future.

There are some filler tracks that almost get to where they tease, suffering from Corsten's tendency to make one hook the entire song. "Are you ready" is maybe a little too early on in the record for that kind of let down. The title track and "Watch Out" have some quirky old school video game bleeps and whistles but overall stays in the monotone melody range. Although pleasantly nostalgic, Ferry's cover of 808 State's "Cubik" doesn't seem to expound much more on the original.

While there's no track here that's as infectious as "Rock Your Body Rock," there's definitely enough here that tastes and smells like the monster anthem to sate the casual Corsten listener and please devoted fans.
