Fredrick Ford - Out Of The Dark

OMC

Sometimes it's best to stick to your day job. There have been a couple of newbies on the dance music scene in recent years. While one of these singers seems to be a bit more vocally talented, another seems to be relying on studio tricks and decent production to float him through. Ironically, both used to do gay porn and both use the last name Ford. While many folks are excited about the presence of Colton Ford in the dance industry, others are hoping Fredrick Ford will be leaving soon. It's kind of funny, because I have enjoyed both of Fredrick's past singles. "Too Funky" was his debut and while the vocals weren't exactly the best I've heard, they were all right enough for the song, and the video was cute too. Follow-up single "Turn My World Around" was a big improvement with a catchy chorus and great production to boot. Now comes third single "Out Of The Dark." Not wanting to mess with a good thing, some of the mixers on the last song are back, including Georgie Porgie and Josh Harris.

Some people out in clubland may be relieved, because there actually aren't a lot of vocals on this song, just a chorus. Josh Harris starts us off with an electro-tinged stomper that is the best mix of the package. It's fun and bouncy and perfect for peak-hour dancing. Georgie Porgie's Light House Mix follows with exactly what the title implies: a lighter, housier song with extra strings and more vocal vamps than actual singing. Edson Pride's Massive Tribal Dub lets loose with much more drums and heavier bass than the previous two mixes. It's nothing too original, but it is a decent dark dub for late night carousing. DJ Escape and Dom Capello also contribute a dub that is very tribal in nature and the pounding drums are the key ingredient here. It's another good choice for late night clubbers. G Cavelle's Electro Mix is a bit too busy for my tastes. All of the extra keys and beats overpower Fredrick's vocals for the majority of the song. Tod Miner's Elektro X2 speeds up the beat but is just as noisy as the previous mix. Again, the vocals here aren't strong enough to fit in with this style and they end up sounding out of place. Lastly, Bryan Reyes offers his Dark-Fire Tribal Mix, which is probably the best of the darker mixes. Sometimes the vocals sound a bit off, but for those who just want to hear the beats, there is also a dub.

Overall, this is a decent single, though the electro mixes could have been skipped. I would suggest sticking with the Josh Harris and Georgie Porgie mixes for maximum satisfaction. Fredrick Ford may rely a bit heavily on the processing of his vocals, but he is now on his third hit single, so clubbers do like him. Kudos to doing your own thing and letting the naysayers move on by.
