For over ten years, Compost Records has led the way in showcasing
upfront and cutting-edge jazz music through its Future Sounds of Jazz
series. The label now celebrates the release of the tenth installment
in this trend-setting series, having enjoyed tremendous success with
this series featuring some of the most well-known artists in the
"nu-jazz" scene. The release of the tenth volume represents an
extraordinary milestone for Compost. In a climate where many
independent record labels are struggling, Compost triumphs with a
collection that many will buy blind based solely on the label and
series' reputation. Past volumes of Future Sounds of Jazz featured
exclusive unreleased cuts from luminaries in the nu jazz world
including Jazzanova, Fauna Flash, Atjazz, Hacienda Origami, and
Amalgamation of Soundz.
Compost label founder Michael Reinboth compiled Future Sounds of Jazz
vol. 10 and features the same impeccable selection found on prior
volumes. Reinboth stretches well beyond "nu jazz" including tunes that bring in techno, house, downtempo and Latin rhythms. Povo's classic retake on "Uam Uam" remixed here by Canadian producer Moonstarr, stands prominently as the second track. "La Ritournelle" by French musician Sebastian Tellier took listeners on a blissful reverie during '04's winter and here, the song ends Future Sounds of Jazz 10 on the same gorgeous note. Reinboth spared no expense including his firin' remix of Cal Tjader's 6/8 dance
"Los Banditos." Jazz dancers beware; this one's serious - Tjader's
vibes flow over Reinboth's techy keys and house rhythm - it's the gem of
the compilation.
When Reinboth started the Future Sounds of Jazz series in 1994, it was
one of the "first compilations that dug deeper into underground music
sub-styles beyond techno, hip-hop and house," he says. For each compilation, Reinboth
looked for tunes that reflect "a certain spirit, a double effect of
being a tune standing between the sheets of styles." He looks for a
song with that je ne sais quoi or "zeigeist," as he calls it.
Though this is tenth volume for Future Sounds of Jazz, Reinboth does
not consider this a commemorative edition. "My distributor suggested
I make this a 'best of,' but I didn't want that. I wanted to have new
and up-to-date music on this volume."
Reinboth continues to look forward on the heels of the Future Sounds
of Jazz 10 and Compost's recent 100th release. "We're going to be as
open minded, diverse and subversive as ever. We've had fucked-up
electro like Funkstorung or electronica guitar music like Genf on the
label along with acid jazz and real jazz like Intuit and now Eddy
Meets Yannah. We'll have more tunes available only as digital
downloads. We also have a new subsidiary label for disco-punk,
called Angora Steel. I'm not quite sure if we will have a Future
Sounds of Jazz Vol. 15 or 20? But we'll have other compilations with a different
concept or digital compilations. We have a web-shop with downloads soon and we will have a
Compost 10 years anniversary DVD in the pipeline.
