Long-term point man Richard Ford recently left Distinct'ive, but General Midi stays with the label for their new album and this raucous single, "Milton." It is a fine way to hear GM's trademark pounding techy beats and electro driven basslines at full force in three different ways.
Eels and Paul's Digital One Mix (purchase/download) utilizes tasty electronic noises and vocal samples with a fat bottom-end and break. The Digital One version head things up nicely with tight, punchy breakbeats infused with cowbell rolls, minimalist percussion, and a bass/lead line ample energy. This "Milton" is also topped off with clever glitch edits, sound effects, and a retro vocal sample detailing the "electronically creation of any imaginable sound."
On more of an electrotech-house vibe, but still just as bleepy. The Digital Zero mix (purchase/download) is essentially the same as the Digital One mix, but housed-up and the break beat is lost and replaced with some pounding four to the floor action.
The Dee Zed Remix (purchase/download) particularly stands out as they are able to explore electro-house. Taking elements of the original(s) and squishing them up, with a more rolling bass line, even more glitch-tech action and a more minimal use of the original vocal sample, the Dee Zed mix makes for an interesting listen and a dance floor friendly tune; with an extremely contemporary sound this one will undoubtedly cross a few genre gaps.
Soon to come album should be interesting A fun, upbeat, and highly modern listen!
Release June 2008 on Distinct'ive Records
