Groove Coverage - Poison

Toucan Cove

This revelatory cover version from German troupe Groove Coverage turns Alice Cooper's late 80s Metal power ballad "Poison" into a revved up Hi-NRG stomper and refreshingly enough, in this era when remix packages often owe little to the Radio Edit of a song, the 135 bpm Extended Mix nicely just extends the radio cut's buzzing synth undercurrents and hard-charging beats while the 139 bpm Tune Up Mix gives the song a lighter palatte with brash electronic chords and a synth hook reminiscent of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough." Britain's All Around The World label remix team the Friday Night Posse further jack the pace up to a frantic 144 bpm, though the almost gothic touches at the dropouts still give their mix a feeling of openness, before slamming back into the urgent Rave-styled beats.

Similar in style and tempo is the also-144 bpm KB Project Remix, which has a sparser arrangement, marked with skittering drum rolls and vocal stutters over the frenzied rhythm track. The real star of the package though, simply titled the Club Mix, urgently pounds along with a frenzied urgency that belies the 135 bpm while adding an additional hook by repeating the "But I better not fall in love with you" to riotously marvelous effect. Truly euphoric, the Club Mix of "Poison" shows that while Hi-NRG may have moved far from its 1980s roots, the genre still lives on today.
