One of my all-time favorite dance songs was released in 2003 from R&B singer Heather Headley. The song was called "I Wish I Wasn't" and mixes by Junior Vasquez and Darryl James helped elevate the song to a bona fide dance hit.
The song was taken from Heather's debut album "This Is Who I Am" which was released in 2002. Heather's flawless vocals helped earn her two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best R&B Vocalist. Heather was born in Trinidad. Both of her parents are ministers and they moved to Indiana when Heather was fifteen years old. The spiritual power not only permeates Heather's life, but also her music.
Four years later Heather returns with her sophomore effort titled "In My Mind" which drops January 31, 2006 here in the United States. The lead single "In My Mind" secures another spot on my favorites list thanks to some sumptuous and perspicacious mixes from Freemasons and Dave Hernandez. The "Freemasons Vocal Club Mix" delivers the Freemason's unmistakable and sophisticated house sound with gorgeous piano and an infectious beat designed to involuntarily move you. One of my favorite parts of the lyrics is when Heather sings "had a bad breakup, thinks he's on his way up."
The "Dave Hernandez Club Mix" is more low-key compared to the Freemasons' mix. I would describe the mix as more chilled-out with lower tempo perfect for a warm-up set. The goal of the Heather's latest album "In My Mind" was to make the best record she could. She mentions that she only sings what she feels and it is evident not only on "This Is Who I Am," but also on "In My Mind."
