Before the term "world music" was coined, there was Hugh Masekela and his amazingly forward thinking style. Hugh Masekela was born near Johannesburg in 1939 and has covered the globe and played with just about every top star you can think of. The anti-apartheid movement became an important influence in his life and in 1961 Masekela went into exile where Harry Belafonte helped him settle in the U.S. From 1965 to 1976, Masekela teamed with Stewart Levine to form the wildly influential Chisa Records imprint. Culled from the back catalog, this new album features 14 tracks of rare and unreleased gems. Hugh worked tirelessly with Nelson Mandela and now lives once again in his native South Africa where he continues to record and tour, bringing his immeasurable talents and word of freedom to people the world over. Whether you are a big fan or new to Hugh Masekela, you would be hard pressed to find a better collection highlighting his talents than this new disc.
