JK Walker - Secret Life of Trance

Majestic/MRI
The title an obvious play on the title of Stevie Wonder's 1979 song and album, "The Secret Life of Plants," "The Secret Life of Trance," remixed by the surging JK Walker (Majestic Recording, Inc.), is the second installment in a series spawned by the vinyl success of this genre on the Bulletproof label.

It is seventy-two minutes of dreamlike, out of body rapture. Alternatively, fifteen cuts that sound like one long jam unless your ear can spot the seams in the almost-seamless mix. In fact, when I'm just listening or hanging at various clubs, that is the one complaint I hear voiced most often when a jock gets stuck in trance for too long. Indeed "trance" is a good bridge or interlude in a song or set with many vocals. I ponder if that was its origin. Standing alone or in the hands of an inexperienced music mixer, it stands on skinny stilts. That is where JK (once known as "Jay") Walker's skills save the day. Inside of his versatility is a mixologist that has his star rising among producers. He has remixed tracks for Nukleuz and Data among others.

This CD includes the tribal rhythms of "Momentous" by Apogee [90 Degrees North], Cloud 9's "Transmission" [Diffuse], and my personal favorite Sureshot, "Handz Up!" by Arome [Mohawk] with its many movements, and a vocal shout or two that plays brilliantly in the middle of a crowded dance floor. His own "Survival" [Active Media] assured as it finishes the album in resounding, adrenalin rush, and theatrical fashion.

JK Walker has come a long way in just four years as a club jock and independent producer. These kids today are just RCA-cord ready! No wonder they have dubbed him one of the 'Future Heroes'. Make it part of your arsenal this holiday season.

Non-DJs will enjoy this as good music to drive to on a long road trip, or energetic background as you do your chores at the crib. Indeed, the more you listen to this, the more you will hear. It's European trance at its mesmerizing best!
