Start to Move marks the full album debut of Chicago native Jason Antone. With three one-off singles (not included here) under his belt, Jason’s been leading up to this thirteen-track collection of dance-pop and electronica fare since 2006.
The title track leads off in full dance style with stacked vocals and a dark bassline, followed by the electronica of “To the Limit,” with its almost Egyptian feel and ample vocal effects. While not lyrically deep, you’ll immediately perk up to the get-up-and-party vibe of “Ooh Ooh Ooh.”
Exploring the 80s Vibe With A Tasty Cover
Yes, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is a Tears For Fears cover, but well done in tasty dance-pop fashion. The upbeat “How’s Anybody Gonna Love You Like That” sports the best chorus hook and some hot instrumental transitions. “Free,” a bouncy mid-tempo track with a strong melody, is the most outstanding song on the album, with a Phil Collins essence complemented by a Ricky Martin-like delivery.
Jason's Not Afraid To Go Downtempo
In a genre where downtempo tracks are usually skipped past as filler, Jason’s are tough to ignore. The ear-catching ballad “Nothing to Hide” undulates with moody programming and Erasuresque flavor allowing Jason the opportunity to show off his range, while the trippy chill-out ballad “Like Me” follows soon after.
Summary
Overall, this is an impressive record from a newcomer working hard in
a style not fully appreciated in the states. The CD is well produced and Antone wrote everything here sans the cover tune.
Release June 2009 on Chickie Records.
