Jaymen - Ooh La Licious

Marian Records

Not every track that comes through clubland's doors has to have a big diva vocal or a pop starlet's name attached to it. That is the case with Jay Men's "Ooh La Lishious." Light on vocals but heavy on drums and energy, this duo from the Netherlands proves that sometimes all you need is a good beat and a funky rhythm to get the floor moving. It's a track that is very reminiscent of Stretch and Vern from back in the day, fusing elements from different styles of house music.

This single has a few remixes that go in varying directions. The Yiannis Easy To Switch It Mix goes in a very tribal direction, using lots of drums and synthesizers to accentuate the track. Vocal samples are dropped in here and there with a breakdown halfway through with just a chant and rebuilding into the pounding drums. The Denacucci Rework leaves the drums behind and focuses in on the synthesizer track. This mix also breaks down halfway through with a very Fatboy Slim-sounding vocal sample of "ooh la la Sasoon." It does this again about a minute and a half afterwards. It's a fun mix with a throwback to the nineties feel about it. Speaking of Fatboy Silm, The Rejexx Mix feels like it was done by the man himself. Lots of vocal samples and synth stabs are the highlight along with a tech-house beat that runs throughout. This is the longest of all the mixes, clocking in at 8:15. The Dean Cronic Bump Mix is a mash up of all sorts of styles. First it seems to be going in an underground style, then it the samples kick in and it gets more cluttered and heads into a filtered direction but only for a bit because then it veers off into a harder techno style. This is probably the most confusing mix and will surely throw your clubbers for a loop.

The Tom Novy Remix actually brings down the BPMs for a bit, turning the track into a more laid-back groove. All the drums and vocal snippets are here, but the synthesizers are more prevalent and the song overall feels less frenetic. Finally, the Delishious Mix has an electro-tech mix with lots of synth stabs and that ever-present vocal sample telling us "they turn it out, without a doubt." This is the most minimal mix of the batch, never adding anything beyond the original elements.

Jay Men have put together a great song with "Ooh La Lishious." The slew of mixes are in varying styles and all of them are pretty decent floorfillers. Not too many mainly instrumental tracks get heavy airplay in clubs, but this one would be a good choice to add to your set. Let's see what other tricks this duo has up their sleeves in the coming months.
