The Juan Maclean - Less Than Human

Astralwerks

Less Than Human is a nice little glitch dance record, though not so glitchy where there are no melodies to hum along too. There's a bit a songwriting here and a bit of programming there, to make a nice little record for those bored with straight-up club music, yet not so bored that they want to hear random computer grunts for 45 minutes.

"Shinning Skinned Friend" has the f%#k-off drum kit of disco-punk while a Big Brother from the future raps off some soliloquy to a robot, it appears. The totalitarian theme is maintained in the electrohouse ditty "Crush the Liberation," where a female voice frantically asks questions of some unknown unresponsive menace. "Give me every little thing" has the raw beat charm of an updated Wild Style soundtrack, including a chant that you could imagine hearing on a basketball court somewhere in the Horsehead Nebula. There's tastes of Royksopp in the dreamy electro "My time is running out" and that same flavor is delivered on the intro of "Dance with me,", only to be dashed by what sounds like a club kid strung out on Aldous Huxley soma, pleading for companionship in the cold future The Juan Maclean have created.

A must for fans of Kraftwerk and the Spectral Sound label.
