"KMFDM takes everything I love about music, combines it and turns it into a supersonic kick in the ass." This pretty much sums up my feelings about KMFDM and their new disc 'Tohuvabohu.' I am by no means saying that this is a perfect record, but it is a good solid offering from Kaptain K and company.
After 20+ years of making music, there are certain things that are expected from a KMFDM recording, and the 1st track is a great 'classic' KMFDM song. In 'Superpower' everything's here... the heavy bass, the crunchy guitars, distorted vocals... and the new addition of a saxophone. They have utilized the voices of fans calling a 'hotline' to express what KMFDM means to them mixed in with boastful and self-aware lyrics.
The disc gets into a groove through the next couple of tracks 'Looking for Strange', the title track 'Tohuvabohu' and 'I Am What I Am' before cranking up the guitars in 'Saft und Kraft' and 'Headcase'. These tracks almost make it seem like the Kaptain is on auto-pilot... they are good, but not as full of 'piss and vinegar' as the last few releases.
Kicking up the 'angry' a bit towards the end of the record are 'Not In My Name', 'Spit Or Swallow' and 'Fait Accompli'. These 3 tracks are classic KMFDM. Full of rage, wisdom, and clever lyrics. The disc comes to a close with 'Bumaye,' a metallic, bombastic dirge with a chant-along chorus.
While this is not the best KMFDM record from their considerable back catalog, it is a good, solid progression of the KMFDM sound and vision. I can't wait to experience the inevitable tour that should start up soon. They put on a GREAT show, and if you can get to a live show, you should go.
