Here's a bit of old school funk worked into house form. Two mixes, both by
Ralphi Rosario. All vocals by Jamiroquai. Ralphi's Old School Vocal mix
stays musically true to the original, and the vocals are pretty
straightforward and well done by Jamiroquai. A phatt 70s funk bassline,
rhythmic guitar strums and a horn section effectively conjure up disco
balls, underlit dance floors and polyester. Ralphi's Hollywood Rock Dub
really isn't a dub at all- because the vocals are so prominent. However, the
tempo is brought up and newer, more synthetic sounds are used instead of the
acoustic sounds on the vocal mix. Also, the bridge is dropped, and the dub
track instead plows along with more intensity than the vocal mix. I know
Ralphi can hit harder than this; still, it's groovy, deep and plays with
authority. I just wish the dub didn't delve so deeply into the vocal verses.
To me the lyric line "Hey Hey Hey / What You Got to Say" should've been
worked a lot more. Small complaints aside, the dub still has Ralphi's
trademark synths and atmosphere. The dub's at it's best on a sweaty club
dance floor, while the vocal is more for a bop down the street. Another fun
record.
