There aren't enough concept albums being made today, so kudos to Laurent Garnier for putting together an eerie ten tunes about a mythical machine that "has the power to recharge the batteries of the sky." The musical underpinnings are mostly a kind of psychedelic jazz with many of the melodies played on heavily processed keys, with lots of electronic garnish and the occasional Spanish guitar or string section. The individual tracks average 5-7 minutes in length, giving them time to unfold and explore their themes, mostly in slower tempos, although "Controlling The House, Pt. 2" is in fact a more or less straight-up house tune (don't be confused, there is no part one). And confusing is definitely a theme here, either overtly, as in the spoken word stream-of-unconsciousness interlude of "First Reaction," or somewhat more indirectly, as with the somewhat ominous pronouncements that open the album.
