Hidden Potential Of "Unbeautiful"
Someone saw potential in this track. The album was released in late 2008 but went by without much notice. Somewhere along the way, however, someone thought, "Hey, I bet that song would sound great on the dancefloor." Taking a stab at that very idea are bigtimers Jason Nevins and Mike Rizzo, along with remixer Matt Pendergast, who I've not heard of previously.
Nevins Rocks The Remix For Lesley Roy
Nevins does his typical shtick with this track, creating an upbeat and guitar-driven background very similar to his remix for Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Lesley's growl sounds good with his style, but as with his mixes anymore, I find myself a little bored. I would really like to see Nevins stop getting work for a bit so he can recharge and find a new sound, something to reinvent himself with. Obviously people are enjoying his style because he does continue pumping out mixes, but this is a personal desire of mine. 3 star mix.
Matt Pendergast turns in a couple of short mixes, his extended mix clocking in around four and a half minutes. He doesn't do a bad job and I think I'd be partial to the mix if he extended it by another couple minutes. His mix is understates, not flashy or shiny, but a nice beat and a solid melody to support Roy's lyrics and vocals. 2 and a half stars due to length.
Mike Rizzo supplies another Funk Generation mix, although there's nothing funky about it. He turns "Unbeautiful" into an ass-shaking electro frenzy that leaves me breathless from dancing and singing along. This is another mix that beautifully complements Roy's distinctive vocals, and I vastly prefer this mix to either of the others. 5 star mix, a knockout!
Summary
While Lesley Roy, with her current team of writers and producers, is nothing terribly special, this track is definitely not "Unbeautiful". Maybe someone important will read this and take a stab at remixing "Psycho Bitch" or "I'm Gone, I'm Going."Remixes released February 2009 on Jive Records
