Guide Review - Lolene "Sexy People"

Lolene is a frisky, funky, and truly interesting individual. She is an LA resident who hails from Bristol and includes singing for Roni Size and songwriting in her resume. Her style is distinctive (one of her outfits at the International DJ Expo in Atlantic City comprised of a hot pink bra, a scarf, and an owl pendant) and her height allows her and her large mane of curls to stand out. While completing her debut album, Electrick Hotel, she has released her first single, "Sexy People." Lolene's lead single is a total party track, a combination of Timbaland's production for Madonna's "4 Minutes" mixed with Lady Gaga and a little bit of grime. Lyrics include "Sexy bitches, we rule the world!" and "Automatic club addict." She describes this sound as "awkward-pop," of all things. I love her for that alone, but her music actually lives up to the description. A lot of vocal manipulation and dissonant harmonies over the chant-style verses don't allow you to get too comfortable with the music, instead wrenching your focus back to the song. I appreciate this approach.

Talking about Sexy Remixes

While "Sexy People" in it's original form could definitely get asses shaking, mixes by Static Revenger, Michael Woods, and Mike Rizzo are aimed at making them shake even more. Sam Sparro & Golden provide a more laidback hipster-esque Stuart Price groove to the track. Not something I'd dance to, but a style that definitely suits Lolene's vocals. Mike Rizzo gives up a Funk Generation mix that is a direct club translation. It isn't too distinctive on its own, but the mix does a good job of being a vehicle to transport Lolene to clubgoers across the globe. At just under 7 minutes long, the Funk Generation mix can easily fit into most club sets. Michael Woods takes the track in a more European stadium-anthem style, big synths, and easy beats carrying "Sexy People" along admirably. This mix is similar in length to Rizzo's production, but has a little more pizazz to it and would do a good job of getting me to shake my ass. As always, though, I prefer a good slice of chunky electro and Static Revenger provides a hefty meal. This mix contains the fat bassline from the original chorus but really amps up the energy for a spirited mix I will definitely be throwing in my sets. At 5:09 though, it is the shortest remix provided and that makes me a little sad.

Taking Lolene Out on the Dancefloor

After getting a chance to spin a couple of the mixes, there is a huge difference between what sounds good in headphones and what sounds good in a bar/club, which any DJ can tell you. I experienced this first hand with mixes of "Sexy People." The instrumentation in Static Revenger's mix drowns out Lolene's vocals and sounds messy, where the clean production of the Michael Woods mix definitely appealed to my crowd far more.
