Guide Review - Lolene "Sexy People"
Lolene is a frisky, funky, and truly interesting individual. She is an LA resident who hails from Bristol and includes singing for Roni Size and songwriting in her resume. Her style is distinctive (one of her outfits at the International DJ Expo in Atlantic City comprised of a hot pink bra, a scarf, and an owl pendant) and her height allows her and her large mane of curls to stand out. While completing her debut album, Electrick Hotel, she has released her first single, "Sexy People." Lolene's lead single is a total party track, a combination of Timbaland's production for Madonna's "4 Minutes" mixed with Lady Gaga and a little bit of grime. Lyrics include "Sexy bitches, we rule the world!" and "Automatic club addict." She describes this sound as "awkward-pop," of all things. I love her for that alone, but her music actually lives up to the description. A lot of vocal manipulation and dissonant harmonies over the chant-style verses don't allow you to get too comfortable with the music, instead wrenching your focus back to the song. I appreciate this approach.
